Thanks for a Great Spring

While our season ended in a disappointing fashion Monday, I will remember a lot of great things about this year.  We were streaky, lost a few more than we won, made a lot of defensive mistakes, and hopefully learned a lot from them, but I smiled more on the ball field than I have in a long time. While there was quite a bit of enjoyment to balance the struggles, these guys battled everyday, played tough and competitively and had a chance to win each game.  More than anything, I saw a shift in attitude from an unsure will to win, to a grown up play to win everyday attitude.  That is a big step for our program which has struggled to establish consistency over the last few years.  Again, while we didn't win enough - I don't know if you ever do - this team marks a change in culture in the program, a culture which will carry on.

Thanks Boys!

Please come out and join us in honoring the team and the senior class at the awards banquet on May 28th.

And, I hope to see you at some Gators games this summer.

Falcons Sneak back to .500

With an interesting three game stretch, the Falcons have climbed back to a 6-6 record.

The team first returned to the win column with a 4-3 win over rival Liberty last Thursday night April 16th.  Seth Taylor started on the mound allowing only 2 runs - 0 earned - and he was followed by Drew Law who earned the win in relief.  Offensively, Andrew Byrd and Zack Dingus had multi-hit games and the pair provided the last inning heroics with a 2 out double by Byrd, followed by the GWRBI base hit by Dingus.

On Friday the 17th, the team traveled to Fireman's Field to take on Loudon Valley High School in a Cedar Run contest.  The Falcons opened with an offensive explosion in the first inning with Nick McMahon, Drew Smith and Ryan Smith reaching safely to load the bases for Andrew Byrd who launched his first homerun of the year over the right field wall.  Unfortunately, the Falcons relinquished the momentum in the bottom half of that frame by allowing 6 unearned behind solid pitching by Lee Cranford.  The back and forth scoring continued throughout the night, but it was the Falcons who scored last, winning 14-12.  The Falcons scored from all over the lineup card and had multi-hit games by Byrd and Ryan Smith.  Seth Taylor also provided a pinch hit, RBI single to plate the eventual winning run in the 6th.

After a rainout with district opponent Culpeper on Tuesday, the Falcons returned to action on Wednesday at Kettle Run.  The Falcons pitching staff and defense did a masterful job of holding the Cougars to only two runs on the night on the way to a 4-2 victory.  Nick McMahon earned the win in the contest, but the pitching duties were spilt up as Seth Taylor, Drew Law, Lee Cranford and Forrest Drake came on in relief.  The Falcons started the scoring in the first with McMahon reaching on a Hit-By-Pitch, followed by a base hit by Drew Smith and then Ryan Smith reached loading the bases for Andrew Byrd who picked up his 16th RBI of the season on a base hit to right.  He would later drive in Ryan Smith to add his team leading 17th RBI.  Josh Rogers was 1-1 reaching base three time on the night, and McMahon was 2-3 with a single and a double.

The Falcons host Osbourn Friday night at Athey Ballpark.

Falcons Fall Back to .500 After Tough Week

Despite solid pitching and offense on all three occasions, the Falcons dropped three in a row to even the record at 3-3.  Monday the team visited Potomac, losing 6-3 behind a deep start by Seth Taylor.  On Tuesday, the team traveled to district opponent Osbourn and came up short on a late surge losing 9-8 in an exciting game.  Friday's 6-4 loss came at home against Battlefield in a game which was shortened by field conditions.

Sunday, March 22, 2009

Falcons Move to 3-0

With a weekend of wins over Culpeper and Kettle Run, the Falcons move to 3-0 as they enter a busy three game week.  On Friday at Culpeper the Falcons opened district play winning 10-2 behind a strong start from Nick McMahon.  The offensive day was led by McMahon, Andrew Byrd, Ryan Smith and Drew Smith-all with multi hit games.

Saturday the team played host to Kettle Run, and Lee Cranford started on the mound pitching masterfully.  He was followed by Forrest Drake and the two combined for seven shutout innings.  Noah Joseph, Ryan Smith, Cranford and Drew Smith had multi hit days, and third baseman Chris Drerenberger smacked a timely pinch-hit, two RBI base hit in the 6th.

The Falcons travel to Potomac Monday and then to district opponent Osbourn on Tuesday before returning home on Friday to host Battlefield.

Falcons Open With Win Over Sherando

Behind a solid pitching night from Nick McMahon, Lee Cranford, Forrest Drake and Seth Taylor, the Falcons were able to overcome some early defensive miscues with scrappy offensive play throughout the game.  The offense was led by Senior Zack Dingus who was 4-5 with the game winning RBI in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Junior Ryan Smith also was 3-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored to lead the team.   The Falcons came from behind on four occasions in the game, the last coming in dramatic fashion in the 9th. Andrew Byrd flied out to start the inning, then Seth Taylor and Noah Joseph earned back-to-back one out walks to set the table for Junior Hunter Pearson.  Pearson doubled driving in the run to even the score at 7 and leaving the game winner ninety feet away for Dingus.   The Falcons travel to Culpeper next Friday to open district play.
